Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

Dr. Petra Ehrenbrink
On Friday, September 13 at All-School Meeting, a few of our international students introduced us to the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, the second grandest festival in China after Chinese New Year.

On the first full moon in September, family members gather to celebrate with traditional mooncakes and lanterns and to remember and honor family members and friends who live afar. It can be hard to spend holidays away from family especially without the comfort of familiar customs and traditions.

When the Chinese students told us about one of the legends behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, I thought my German V class could perhaps create something around that story to let their fellow students know that, though they are far from home and family, they are among friends.

I am grateful to my students who so willingly agreed to shift from our planned lesson on transformation using a Greek myth to using a Chinese legend. After translating the text from English, the class opted to create a summary and illustrate it. Please use this link to view their work. Enjoy!
