The Path that Led Him to Landschop: Chris Buccino '02

For his Major Effort project, now known as Extended Inquiry, Chris Buccino ’02 designed a golf course. He was a huge golf fan. Some may remember that Chris got on stage in every talent show to see how long he could bounce a golf ball on a club. By the end of senior year, he was pretty good at it.

He really wanted to major in golf course design and started school at Guilford College but realized that the focus was too narrow and transferred to a broader five-year landscape architecture program at the University of Florida.

In his fourth year he learned about European urban design techniques during a semester abroad in Paris and Rome through the Columbia University Research Center. The class visited spaces in both cities and surrounding areas, and studied gardens and other places around Italy, specifically Rome, Florence, Sienna and Venice.

“It was the best experience that I had in all of college,” Chris told students on Alumni
Networking Day. “You have to take advantage of these types of experiences because when in life are you going to have this opportunity?”

In undergrad, Chris took classes in environmental science, plant biology, ecosystems, biosphere, geology, and lots of geometry (including the geometry of ice). He participated in the professional horticulture program at Walt Disney World and did several internships before working as a project designer with Stephen Stimson Associates Landscape Architects in both Falmouth and Cambridge. The firm provided Chris with the opportunity to collaborate on world class projects, including landscaping for Falmouth Academy and a 300-acre public park in San Antonio, Texas. He then received his master’s degree at the Harvard Design School and eventually created his own shop, Landschop.

Working with Hutker Architects, Chris redesigned the space behind FA, now known as Hutker Yard. Among other projects, he is currently working on a new charter school south of Atlanta where he is using 41-inch diameter trees, that had to be removed from the project area, to create an amphitheater.

Musing on his first love though, Chris said he would love to see a golf team at FA. Hmmm. He might just know a guy who could design a course….
