Monster Mash

As the spring term wound down, first-year modern language teachers Jennifer Park (Spanish) and Pauline Levy Valensi (French) collaborated on an art assignment that allowed their students to synthesize their nascent language skills. Students were asked to create fantastical monsters and then bring them to life through a short narrative. Not only did they describe their creature’s physical appearance but gave them dimension by detailing their habitat, family structure, activities, and preferences. 

Students were encouraged to explore various art mediums. Some opted for colored pencils or markers, while others tried digital design. 

Park divided her students into teams and had them post their monsters around the school. Teams raced each other to find the drawings and match them to their corresponding descriptions. The team with the most correctly identified monsters won.

“This ended up being a great end-of-the-year project for students to pull together their knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures,” said Park. It also gave them a respite from the stress that the end of term can bring noted Levy Valensi. “Adding this kind of creativity and fun paid off,” she said, “my students were more focused and really cared about doing well.”

Andre tiene mil doscientos treinta y cuatro años. Andre vive en el bosque con su familia en la planata de bosque. Andre es azul. Andre es pequeño y muy suave. Su hijo de la familia.

Le monstre s’appelle Hector, il a quatre cents ans. Hector aime écouter de la musique et marcher dans un jardin. Hector est bleu avec violet. Hector est grand et calme. Hector habite avec ses amis dans une maison en Transylvanie, Roumanie.

Le monstre s’appelle Shu Shu. Le monstre habite dans une forêt. Shu Shu est Lu Lu’s soeur. Le monstre a trois ans. Le monstre est rose. Le monstre est hérissé. Le monstre est petit.
