ONSHORE - middle-school science on the shore
This course is for 5th- and 6th-grade students seeking a deeper dive into marine and environmental science. Through a combination of field and laboratory work, students will explore Cape Cod ecosystems, chemical properties of seawater, coastal geology, and environmental issues.
Students will "learn by doing" sample collection techniques, microscope analysis, and introductory marine chemistry methods. Local field sites have a variety of habitats, such as sand dunes, salt marshes, and tidal pools.
Participants will receive an ONSHORE t-shirt, backpack, field journal, water bottle, and a signed copy of one of Gil Newton’s books.
Gilbert Newton is a Cape Cod native and adjunct professor at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Cape Cod Community College. Newton has taught marine and environmental science for over thirty years, from middle school through college. He is a founding member of the Barnstable Land Trust and is a Past President of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. Additionally, he is the author of several books about the Cape Cod shoreline including the recent Mysteries of Seaweed: Questions and Answers, Activities
for the Cape Cod Beachcomber, Thinking Green on Cape Cod, and, most recently, The Sandy Beach.
