Falmouth Academy Students Explore Cutting-Edge Gene Editing in Woods Hole

Recently, 13 juniors and 3 seniors took part in two four-day CRISPR programs at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, led by Falmouth Academy science teacher Liza Fox ’96, Britta Santamauro, and former faculty member Sharon Kreamer. The programs provided students with hands-on experience using CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology in a professional research setting.

During the week, students conducted laboratory experiments, explored the ethical implications of gene editing, and learned from MBL scientists about their ongoing research and career pathways in the sciences. The experience concluded with student presentations connecting CRISPR research to real-world applications and broader societal considerations.
