Ten students from Falmouth Academy's Model UN Club (FA MUN)took on the roles of diplomats at the 17th session of the MIT Model United Nations Conference (MIT MUNC), held February 7-9, 2025. Representing five countries across five different committees, FA MUN tackled global issues in forums ranging from DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee) to WHO (World Health Organization) to SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonization Committee).
This year’s conference focused on technology, diplomacy, and their global impact.
The keynote speaker, Fadel Adib, an MIT professor and entrepreneur, spoke about the role of emerging technologies in global problem-solving. As founder of Cartesian Systems and director of the MIT Signal Kinetics Lab, he has developed cutting-edge sensing technology with applications in healthcare, robotics, and environmental monitoring. His innovations have earned him international recognition, including awards from the World Economic Forum and the Great Arab Minds initiative.
MIT MUNC is a highly regarded international Model UN conference that attracts high school delegations from across the region. Known for its smaller committee sizes, it ensures that every delegate has the opportunity to participate actively in debate, negotiate resolutions, and develop diplomatic skills. Organized by MIT undergraduates, the conference challenges students to think critically, collaborate across differing viewpoints, and propose realistic solutions to global issues.
Most of the FA delegation traveled together via commuter rail from Lakeville to Cambridge on Friday, arriving in time for the evening’s opening sessions. A smaller group joined later after FA’s Winter Concert.
Saturday was a full day of committee work, where students debated, negotiated, and drafted resolutions. For Lena Jazo ’28 and Matt Kellogg ’26, it was their first conference—one that culminated in successfully helping to pass a resolution.
Beyond the conference, FA MUN braved the winter weather to explore Cambridge and enjoy local food, making the most of their time in the city between sessions.
A huge thank you to teachers, Mike Deasy '10 and Katie Lupo P '30, for organizing and chaperoning the trip!
