Protecting North American Right Whales

Dr. Carolyn Miller, WHOI
North Atlantic right whales are at risk of extinction unless conservation actions that significantly reduce mortality and increase reproduction are implemented. There are approximately 340 animals remaining in the population (estimated by North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium, 2022) and current population trajectories show that out of every whale born, three die. Human activity is a large part of the problem. These whales feed, migrate, and calve off the east coast of the United States and Canada, often in major shipping and fishing areas; hence, they experience high rates of injury and mortality from vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. They also are experiencing climate-driven changes to their food supply and habitat quality. In this workshop, we will explore the importance of whales to the balance of the global ecosystem, the human impact on the fate of these great creatures, and what we can do to help.
