Do you have any updates on orientation?
Details on 7th Grade Orientation and Opening Days were included in the cover letter. In short, orientation for 7th graders only is on Thursday, September 3 from 8:30-2:00. During our first official school week, students will return two grades at a time and there will be no after school activities. Students should be picked up at 3:15 on those days. Buses will depart at 3:15. Students traveling by ferry will be dropped off in time for the 3:45 boat.
Tuesday, September 8: 7th and 8th Graders Only
Wednesday, September 9: 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Graders Only
Thursday, September 10: All Grades
Friday, September 11: All Grades
We continue to look for ways to minimize the number of people on campus so rather than host on-site parent orientation programming, we have decided to “orient” parents by posting a series of videos for all parents the week of August 24 and host a virtual coffee, which will be recorded and posted, for parents of new students on Thursday, August 27 at 4:00.
In an earlier message, you indicated an intention to offer an After School Activity Program. What details can you provide about activity offerings in the afternoon?
We are in the process of designing an after school activity program. All students who choose to remain on campus after school must be enrolled and accounted for in an after school activity offering.
Are there updates on interscholastic competitive athletics?
This week the MIAA announced that all interscholastic competitive athletics have been postponed until at least September 14. So, pre-season athletics and all team practices through that date are, for all intents and purposes, canceled. It is not clear whether the MIAA will permit athletics but if they do not, or if we opt as a school not to participate, we would still try to offer soccer and cross country as two of our after school activity programs.
If a student chooses an athletic option as an After School Activity, how will he/she change into sports clothes?
Students will not be permitted to change in the locker rooms in the athletic wing. Those who have physical education or athletic After School Activity will be permitted to dress for school in athletic attire.
What protocols will you follow in athletics to ensure that social distancing is being reinforced?
As mentioned above, we intend to offer soccer, cross country, and a variety of outdoor physical education alternatives in the afternoon. A committee is drafting practice guidelines for coaches.
Besides outdoor athletics and physical education activities, what offerings will be available to students?
We intend to offer select after school activities during this period. Students may also choose to attend a grade level study hall. The school’s stated participation requirement is being waived this year; no student is required to remain after school.
Are there any electives that were offered last year that will not meet in the afternoon?
Our electives offerings change every year as teacher and student interests evolve. While many of our former elective courses will be offered as After School Activities, some will not, either due to the current public health guidelines or changes in staffing. We have tried to provide a rich and varied list of activities for those students who must remain on campus at the end of classes or who choose to.
How will students sign up for after school activities?
Students will be instructed on how to sign up for after school activities during grade-level meetings on the first day of school. They will likely complete a form indicating for each day of the week whether they plan on staying or not and if they are staying, what activity they will be attending each day of the week, a schedule they will follow for the trimester.
