Scouts Honor for FA Seniors, Domenic and Sam

Congratulations Domenic Bowen ’22 and Sam Thrasher ’22 for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout this summer. Both boys have participated in scouts together since first grade when they were in Cub Scouts with Sam's dad Scott as their den leader. Fast-forward twelve years to August 13, 2021, when the boys reached the pinnacle of their high-school scouting journey as members of Troop 38 from North Falmouth.

Achieving this level of scouting is no mean feat. According to the Boy Scouts of America, only 8% of all scouts complete the requirements which include:
  • Be active in the troop for at least six months as a Life Scout
  • Show dedication to Scout Oath and Scout Law 1
  • Provide references from family, work, church, and other community groups
  • Earn 21 merit badges
  • Serve a minimum of six months in a leadership position2
  • Propose, plan, and carry out an Eagle service project
  • Attend a Scoutmaster conference
  • Pass a board of review
Sam's Eagle project was to upgrade an outdoor classroom space in the courtyard of the East Falmouth Elementary School where he was a student from PreK through Grade 4. His plan was ambitious and Sam led a crew of volunteers last October, adding four large raised garden beds, rebuilt two benches, added two large picnic tables, and created chess and checkerboards. Sam's mom Nancy said, "Sam learned to play chess at East Falmouth Elementary so it was meaningful to create a space where other kids could play."

Domenic's project took place at the Falmouth Service Center (FSC) where he and 23 volunteers rehabilitated an overgrown picnic area at the front of the building. FSC is a multi-agency non-profit that provides a safety net for Upper-Cape residents through an extensive weekly food pantry and assistance with housing and utilities. The scope of his project consisted of clearing brush and debris, weeding gardens, trimming hedges, painting picnic tables, building Adirondack chairs, and repairing a brick walkway while avoiding massive amounts of poison ivy!
