Say Yes!

Carol DiFalco
Winter can be a time that draws us indoors and out of the cold. With any luck, there is a fireplace, a good book, and hot chocolate involved. With less sunlight and colder temperatures, we can lose a bit of our zest for the activity in our life. There is a one-word antidote–yes! Just say, “yes” to healthy opportunities available to you.

Extracurricular activities offer students the opportunity to meet and get to know their peers, a chance to learn and develop new skills, build confidence and a better sense of self. Weaving through all of these benefits is the thread of connection. Connection with oneself comes with learning what interests us and then finding ways to further explore and develop these interests. Connection to peers and trusted adults allows us to build positive relationships, get to know others in a new way, and experience a renewed sense of belonging.

According to Youth Connectedness Is an Important Protective Factor for Health and Well-being from the Center for Disease and Prevention, establishing healthy connectedness to home and school during teenage years indicates adolescents are more likely to be physically and mentally healthier adults. Sedentary behavior experienced more often in winter months can lead to feelings of sadness and disconnection. Through engaging in activity with others our bodies, as well as our minds, are given a positive boost. Whether it be basketball, photo club, stagecraft, volunteering with Engage in community service work, or one of the emerging student activity groups such as after-school a cappella, this winter is a welcoming time to be open and say, “yes” to something new!
