Beyond the Selfie Photo Project

Students in Susan Moffat's Advanced Photography started the year off with a self-portrait project. After turning to some of the greats for inspiration—Vivian Maier, Cindy Sherman, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn—the students were asked to create a self-portrait that revealed something about themselves that is not obvious while also delving into the conceptual realm.

At first, the assignment was met with groans and protests, and Moffat acknowledged that "it isn't always easy being the subject, especially when one is used to being behind the camera." However, she went on to point out that there is a long rich history of self-portraiture dating all the way back to pre-historic cave paintings.

Moffat also asked her students to add text to their work. When questioned as to why she didn't want the photo to speak for itself she said, "I love titles and text because they make the artist think more deeply about what they're trying to say." The students edited their work in Photoshop and added their own personal style to the text and copy, adding another level to the viewer experience.

The exhibit is hanging in the gallery of the Simon Center for the Arts.
