Seven FA seniors met with members of Neighborhood Falmouth on January 28 in a session arranged so the FA seniors could help the Neighborhood Falmouth seniors answer questions and solve problems about using their computers or social media. They worked together Saturday morning in our library and computer room.
Members of Neighborhood Falmouth were paired one-on-one with FA students who addressed their specific technology questions. Kay Paine, a member of Neighborhood Falmouth, was thrilled when FA’s Samantha Doyle helped her make the changes and updates to her Facebook page that had been stymying her.

Richard Guerry, the co-founder of the Institute for Responsible Online Communication (iroc2), will speak at Falmouth Academy January 24th 6:30-8:00 p.m. on how to help our children gain what he calls, “a digital awareness or digital consciousness.” Guerry is the author of the nationally acclaimed book, “Public and Permanent: The Golden Rule of the 21st Century”

Falmouth Academy’s school counselor and organizer of the event, Stephanie Mastroianni, LCSW, said, “Every day amazing and new technological tools and Web sites come into play for our youth. With these developments come inevitable problems. As parents, educators and community members, we have the opportunity to learn how to support our youth in using these technologies responsibly to avoid making permanent mistakes.”

On January 6, juniors and seniors will be able to take advantage of the expertise of those who walked the Falmouth Academy halls before them when 18 alumni moderate roundtable discussions on topics relating to their college (i.e. playing sports, studying abroad) and professional experiences (like careers in the arts). The roundtable discussions take place in the Buxton Library at FA beginning at 8:30. Following All-School Meeting at 10:30, six additional alumni professionals will participate in a panel discussion called “The Write Stuff: The Importance of Good Writing Skills,” moderated by English Chair Ruth Slocum. We invite FA friends and families to attend and hear how skills taught at FA have advanced alumni in the working world. That afternoon, there will be two alumni basketball games versus the varsity teams (girls, 4:00 and boys, 5:00). Later on, alumni (21+) are invited to get together at the Captain Kidd in Woods Hole at 7:30 p.m. for Mariner Night.

It had all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster: scientists exploring clues to the beginnings of creation in the deepest, darkest pockets of the sea floor, new machinery to test, international intrigue, a remotely operated vehicle, body snatchers, and a dramatic rescue at sea in gale force winds.

It all started in late November when R/V Atlantis, with Chief Scientist (and Falmouth Academy science teacher) Dr. Virginia Edgcomb, left the port of Piraeus in Athens. The roster included research scientists from Greece, Germany and the United States.

They were looking forward to delving into the microbial mysteries of Urania, Discovery and L’Atalante Brine Basins, located 3,500-4,500 meters below sea level in the Mediterranean in a research site roughly bound by Italy, Egypt, Greece and Libya.
