Athletics at Falmouth Academy

The Scholar-Athlete

Falmouth Academy’s interest in sports lies in their impact on the physical and mental health of our students, in the common thread each season’s sport provides to the community of the school, and in the lessons of teamwork, sportsmanship, and grace under pressure that can be learned through competitive athletics. Almost all FA coaches are members of the teaching faculty, and are therefore careful to reinforce the values of the school on the courts and playing fields. We are less concerned with producing spectators than with getting students out on the field to play. For this reason, we have no try-outs for our sports teams. We have recently added junior varsity teams in all sports. With a varsity, a junior varsity, and a middle-school team for each sport, every student, regardless of experience or level of ability, has the opportunity to play.

This doesn’t mean, however, that our teams are not competitive. Varsity teams belong to the Southeastern New England Independent Schools Athletic Association (SENEISAA) and compete very successfully with other independent schools in the Boston and Providence areas. In recent years, FA teams have won 5 New England championships and more than 15 league championships.

In the spirit of the core curriculum, Falmouth Academy focuses on a single sport each season: soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and lacrosse in the spring. With well over half the school engaged in the same sport in a given season, conversations among younger and older students, girls and boys, students and teachers can all focus on yesterday’s winning save or tomorrow’s semi-final game. As a community, we celebrate our teams at the daily All-School Meeting and honor our athletes at the Athletic Banquet in May. The Mariner Award, honoring sportsmanship, support, and leadership, is one of the treasured all-school awards presented at Recognition Day ceremonies in June.
