About the Library

The Bruce and Patrice Buxton Library

imageIn fall 2006, Falmouth Academy opened its new, 3,000-square-foot Bruce and Patrice Buxton Library, named for Headmaster Emeritus Bruce Buxton and his wife, Librarian Patrice Buxton. The new space brings much-needed space, collections, equipment for online-research and room for quiet conversations. It allows 40 to 50 teachers and students to research, confer, study, read, and plan comfortably. It is welcoming, handsomely furnished with tables and bookcases handmade by Frank Bowles, Ph.D., a friend of the school. The library was honored in 2007 by the American Library Association as one of the best designed libraries in the nation.

Circulation

Students and faculty are granted full borrowing privileges.

Loan Periods and Renewals

Books (circulating fiction, nonfiction, and college resources) and Audiovisual Materials

Students and faculty may check out an unlimited number of books and audiovisual for a loan period of two weeks. Materials may be renewed as often as needed, provided another patron has not requested the material.

Periodicals

At the discretion of the librarians, newspapers and periodicals may be borrowed for one class period.

Science Fair Materials

Students may check out these materials for one night only. Students may pick up materials after school and must return them before school starts the next day.

Reference Materials

At the discretion of the librarians, students may check out these materials for one night and may renew them as needed.

Help Shelf Materials

These health-related materials are located in a special section within the collection and can be checked out anonymously by students and faculty. Use of these materials is based on the honor system, so there is no official due date. If a student or faculty member is interested in a book, he or she should remove the check-out card in the back of the book and leave it on the shelves – without signing his or her name. Topics include drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, sexual health, mental health, and gender issues. We are in the process of expanding this collection, so if you have suggestions for purchases, please let us know.

Return Policy

Each cardholder is solely responsible for returning, on time, any materials checked out on his/her account. Books and other materials may be returned to the main desk.

InterLibrary Loan

The librarians may obtain materials, including journal articles, from other libraries for students and faculty. Please ask a librarian for help with this.
